Starting out the season

We just got back from our first camping trip of the season. We pulled our 2008 Nomad Joey to Turkey Run State Park in Marshall, Indiana for our inaugural trip of the season.

Turkey Run, for those who don’t know it, is a special place. The landscape in this part of Indiana is so spectacular that two state parks were created in the area, about eight miles apart.

Land in this area was shaped and carved by the power of water, and it created places so unique, the large canyon within Turkey Run has its own microclimate.

Shades State Park, its neighbor to the northeast, is just as spectacular and just a bit rougher.

It had rained in southern Indiana for days before our arrival, ensuring the creek beds that run through the park would be full of water, exactly what I’d been hoping for. Some of the trail caught so much water they had be closed. Portions of those trails were underwater.

I travel with a camera and my goal on every trip to get one decent, high res image. Turkey Run didn’t disappoint. Neither did Shades.

Both these parks are wildly popular, which is one more reason we like to visit them in the early season. Turkey Run, with more than 250 campsites, had a grand total of about 30 campers. That means you can expect to bump into less than a handful of people while out on the park’s trails.
